Local History

From a Stagecoach Stop to a Railroad Town

Before Devine existed, a trading post and stagecoach stop called Francisco, sometimes known as Nicksville, served travelers near Francisco Creek. In 1881 the International and Great Northern Railroad built a depot a short distance east, and storekeeper John L. Nicks moved his store and post office to the new site. The railroad named the station after Judge Thomas J. Devine, a railroad attorney from San Antonio who never lived in the town.

Today Devine is a city in Medina County, part of the San Antonio metropolitan area, served by State Highways 173 and 132. CDL School Devine TX brings the same idea that built the town, moving goods from place to place, to residents who want a Class A career.

Know Your Equipment

Trailers You May Pull With a Class A

The NatureSweet tomato brand was founded in Devine, a reminder of how much fresh produce moves by truck. A Class A CDL opens the door to many kinds of trailers:

Dry van

An enclosed box trailer for general freight.

Refrigerated ("reefer")

Keeps produce, meat and other perishable loads at the right temperature.

Flatbed

Open trailer for building materials and equipment; requires securing the load.

Tanker

Carries liquids and requires a tank vehicle (N) endorsement.

Doubles and triples

Multiple trailers, which require a T endorsement.
